12.30 – 1.30 NO WASTAGE: FAMILY FOOD WASTE COOK UP WITH KINDER KITCHEN RECIPES
FACT: There are 900 million hungry people worldwide whilst an area larger than China is used to grow food that is never eaten. The top 5 ingredients we throw away in the UK are bread, vegetables, milk, leftovers and bananas. Come join in to make an array of salads using up all those ingredients that end up in the waste bin or the recycling heap.
2-3 KVASS MAKING WORKSHOP ROUND 1 WITH SOMEWHERE ARTIST KAREN GUTHRIE
Karen Guthrie leads an introduction to the delicious non-alcoholic fermented drink of kvass, traditionally a homemade beverage most commonly found across eastern Europe and Russia. Often including fruits, herbs and spices, kvass is in its simplest from made from old bread. Yes, old bread.
The result is (perhaps surprisingly so) a delicious fizzy drink, low in sugar and – like other lacto-fermented foods such as yoghurt – very healthy. Learn how to make this simple drink at home with everyday ingredients such as leftover bread, and take away your own kvass-in-progress to ferment at home.
